Chief advisor calls for establishing weapons-free zones in South Asia and Middle East
Principal Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has strongly demanded the revival of global arms control treaties that have weakened over time. He called for the establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones, especially in the Middle East and South Asia. He said this in his speech at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday morning local time in New York.
The Principal Advisor also said, “At the same time, we support the right of every state to use nuclear energy in a peaceful manner with full transparency.”
Dr. Yunus said, “This year, we have witnessed conflicts in almost every corner of the world—not just Myanmar, or in Europe, or in South Asia, or in the Middle East. We live in the most densely populated region of the world.”
He also said, “In no other region of the world are so many nuclear-weapon states located so close together. Therefore, we can deeply understand the importance of disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.’
Professor Yunus said, ‘As a responsible country, before commissioning our first nuclear power plant, this year, we joined the Joint Convention on Nuclear Safety and Waste Management under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency.’
He added, ‘By joining, we are reaffirming our commitment to the highest standards of nuclear safety and transparency.’
The Chief Advisor emphasized on ensuring regional and global peace through non-proliferation and disarmament.
